hi,
form description, understand that: unable deploy printers windows xp clients using gpo windows server 2008.
before going further, i’d confirm following:
1.what os version of windows xp client? 32bit or 64bit?
2.what os version of windows server 2008?
if xp client 32bit , server 2008 64bit, should install 32bit print driver on print server. please refer following steps:
1) on x86 machine, start > run, type \\servername, servername = name of x64 print server.
2) in list of shares, open printers folder.
3) right-click in printers folder , select server properties.
4) go drivers tab , add new x86 driver.
i tested , checked in windows 2008 environment, found 2008 has solution deploying printer queues on client machine has os earlier vista. please check technical article:
print management step-by-step guide
http://technet.microsoft.com/zh-cn/library/cc753109.aspx#deployprintersbyusinggroupp
and after deploying queues in gpo, need user pushprinterconnections.exe utility read printer queue info gpo. deploy printer connections using group policy on computers running versions of windows released prior windows vista, must add pushprinterconnections.exe utility computer startup script or user logon script. pushprinterconnections.exe utility reads printer connection settings group policy , adds appropriate printer connections computer or user account (or updates existing connections). pushprinterconnections.exe file automatically detects , exits on computers running windows vista or windows server 2008. these computers have built-in support printer connections deployed using group policy, can safely deploy file client computers in organization.
in addition. need install group policy preference client side extensions windows xp (kb943729) capable windows server 2008 domain gpos.
