Hyper-V server 2008 r2 as a main OS
hi...you have excuse ignorance new hyper-v. waiting windows 10 upgrade next week can have play it.
in mean time, wondering. have heard of microsoft hyper-v server 2008 r2, , free. got me wondering... spend lot of time in virtualbox , vmware player experimenting different operating systems (usually unix or windows previews), unfortunately, computer runs i3-2350m , 8gb ram, quite slow things virtualbox. learning how develop web applications, , fair amount of dabbling in c# , java too, virtual machine awesome development work in. starting 4 year masters degree @ university in october in computer science, guessing access making , using virtual machines helpful. can experiment software without worrying mess main installation of windows up, 1 has such strange hardware spend half day installing drivers , software after fresh windows install...
cutting chase... question this: how hyper-v server standalone host operating system of main computer. (if there gui allows me access client os console machine, rather on network) install set of virtual machines work in. if messes up, using disk differencing feature (i guess might work), can delete instance of guest operating system , recreate it.
basically, should work dual booting several operating systems on computer, instead of having them accessible via 1 bootloader such grub, have each of operating systems single os run on hyper v. disk differencing feature seems idea if wanted multiple instances of windows 7 install example. have access single 600gb sshd, , don't want spend money on upgrading hardware want...if case, find solution elsewhere. hypothetical question dunce has never had opportunity use , therefore has no understanding of hyper-v. know how use stuff vmware , virtualbox, , 2nd level hypervisors , hyper-v 1st level closer hardware or whatever, apart that.
i know answer "this not looking for" or "hyper v server not this" or "it run horribly", or whatever, want know opinion of this, or if have better solution.
i want have best solution running several operating system instances (probably windows 7 or windows 10, odd openbsd in mix) on main laptop without having mess around bootloaders, more hassle worth if going have os running week or before destroying it. laptop severely struggles run virtual machine of windows 7 in virtualbox on host running windows 7...so have idea of why making complicated myself.
basically: will hyper-v server 2008 r2 run on laptop main os, , install virtual machines inside hyper-v install , use them hyper-v on windows 8.1 or windows 10?
thanks helping 18 year old idiot out ;) sorry if waffled.
hyper-v server has releases 2008 through 2012 r2 (always go latest)
it installs on bare metal (it take on hardware).
everything else run in vm.
it equivalent vmware's esx server, or citrix xenserver - not equivalent virtualbox nor vmware player or vmware workstation (which install on top of os).
