Word 2010 linked documents??

i'm not sure if has been answered i'm not sure how search find out i'll post here.

i training multiple departments.  each department has set of instructions print out.  of these generic , department specific.  want create 1 master document each department has different documents linked can print 1 packet instead of multiple documents each 1 @ time.

i though want set if change 1 of documents master 1 updates change don't need go each department's file change linked several.  example, have faxing procedure document.  each department gets same fax procedure in packet.  has changed in fax procedures want change single fax procedure document , have linked department master packet file don't have go in , change each one.

i tried use outline method in word 2010 duplicated embedded files still have change each 1 inside folder.  fax example duplicated across department masters still have go each department's folder change linked doc.

can done can have 1 master document linked several documents able change 1 of linked documents , have different master files linked 1 document update themselves?

check out word's includetext field. allows link documents @ either whole-of-document or bookmarked-range levels. allows edit content in source document target document (by editing field displays, pressing ctrl-shift-f7). using includetext field gives access source document's bookmarks target document (eg cross-references).

you can create includetext field via:
• insert|object>text file, 'insert link' option; or
• insert|quick parts|field>includetext.
