Hyper-V 2012 R2 creating a new vhdx and copying from a source vhdx will physical file size reduce?

hi,

i'm running hyper-v 2012 r2 part of server 2012 essentials.

as seems common other threads i've read have created expanding vhdx maximum size large (almost same size physical disc lives on). although there around 350gb of data in vhdx, actual file size approaching 900gb on host.

i'm using "add new virtual disk" wizard make new vhdx replace massive file. want contents of old vhdx copied new 1 in add disk wizard selected option copy contents of new disk original.

so question is: source vhdx 900gb, data inside around 350gb. size new vhdx be? reduce nearer actual data size?

i'm asking because i'm running operation external usb drive , it's painfully slow - going take hours complete. if size isn't going reduce may cancel , better option.

any comments appreciated.

if you're copying files manually first 1 second disk (with robocopy example) used size second drive 350 gb.

vhd/vhdx expand size of used data. of course fragmentation you'll eat more more space (up maximum size) after time set reasonable maximum size in beginning.
