How to place TOC into a different frame in an HTML document?

i'm using ms word 2010 update document created in ms word 2003.

i want create toc in separate frame positioned left of frame contains text of document.  using technet i've been able figure out how create frame.  if try create toc in left frame receive error affect there no text process.  if create toc in main document (right frame) works fine , can follow links various headings in document.  you'd want.  however, when cut , paste toc left frame links become broken.  seem end pointing have hard time figuring out why ever want such result.

the news when document saved in html done in form creates html frameset browser displays intended.  however, reason doing have toc entries end being hyperlinks allow navigation corresponding references in document frame.

the perplexing part worked right in word 2003.  hope problem i'm having forgot precisely how perform task.  if not amounts 1 of many reasons regret buying office upgrade.  time abandon word 2010 , return using word 2003 kind of work.

i went 1 of older systems has office 2003 installed.  couldn't easier way word 2003 works.  didn't need special knowledge.  select "format" menu item.  drop down sub menu contains item called "table of contents in frame".  select , wha-la frame added left of document toc.  save document html (i use filtered html think removes ms word unique tags browser doesn't recognize).  end 3 files names follows:

1. your-document-name.htm, file frameset launched browser
   
2. contents.htm
3. body.htm

i'm not sure happens when name duplication encountered.  in case since document contains graphic files, word creates folder named "body_files" , places of graphics there.  contents frame contains links can selected in browser position referenced text.

relearning how works in word 2003 helpful figuring needed done in word 2010.  looks in word 2010 need customize "quick access toolbar".  need hunt through of available commands find 1 called, marvelously, "table of contents in frame".  once command on toolbar becomes easy in word 2003.

one has wonder why microsoft thinks idea make features of prior versions of word easy both use , learn mysterious on newer version of word.  pure hell trying use supposed improved product.  applies whole redesign can see absolutely no merit.  possibly new user, 1 who's never experienced office, might can't imagine there many of past history of using office it.  , real hell me occasional user.  of course 1 reason i've become occasional user i've given on microsoft reason , use libreoffice everything.  unfortunately case i'd done in past using ms word couldn't figure out how libreoffice, guess i'll have give microsoft credit something.
