Hyper-V 2008 R2 SP1 guests losing network connectivity at random
i have dell r710 running hyper-v server 2008 r2 sp1 installed , patches available through windows update (except ones released week). no anti-virus installed on host. box has been in production since oct-2009.
periodically of guest vm's lose network connectivity. of guests either windows server 2003 r2 (latest sp, patched, latest integration services) or windows server 2008 r2 (sp1, patched, latest integration services). it happens both os. have been through event logs on guest , host , events symptoms after failure (unable resolve dns, can't find dc, can't connect blah, etc.). can still ctrl-alt-del "failed" guest through vmconnect.exe and attempt login, take 15-20 minutes through various login steps (authenticating, loading user profile, see gray screen prior explorer loading) i never start bar and have virtually power cycle guest in service.
all virtual nic's standard (not using legacy nic's anywhere). guests in same single "intranet" virtual network switch, except forefront tmg server has 2nd virtual nic part of our "internet" virtual network switch.
the earliest record have of 05-23-2011, , it's been occuring every 3-7 days seems random guest ever since (rds server, forefront tmg server, sce server). last time power cycled host 06-04-2011, , prior 03-12-2011, windows updates. thing i've done otherwise host install dpm remote agent, , after problem started.
the time of day seems random (6:45 am, 11:22 am, 7:02 am, 5:29 am, in pm too). can find no events such backup or scheduled tasks or jobs coincide these failures. backups running 5:30 pm 9:00 pm or so.
i'm aware of both 2003 r2 guest hotfix , 2008 r2 host hotfix random loss of network connectivity, 2008 r2 hotfix should have been rolled windows 7/2008 r2 service pack 1, or @ least version numbers of hv*.exe suggest much.
i'm @ loss try next.
anyone have ideas? in advance!
edit: host not losing connectivity. other guests fine , remain in service, don't consider related physical nic infrastructure. but, in case matters, r710 has 4 broadcom nic's. first (primary) host-only access (not part of virtual network switch). added 2-port intel gb adapter, 1 port in "intranet" virtual network switch, , 1 in "internet". neither have "allow host os share adapter" box checked.
cheers,
