Windows is unable to connect to the Automatic Updates - How to resolve this issue?

recently, microsoft has identified possible issue wsus server , windows update clients.
these issues occur , reflect in event logs following event id:

in windowsupdate.log may see following entries:

“warning: skipping scan, self-update check returned 0x800b0001”
“warning: wu client failed searching update error 0x800b0001”

while going through event logs under applications , services logs >microsoft > windows > windowsupdateclient >operational you may find error event id: 25 follows

cause:

this can due version mismatch between windows update agent , wsus server. wsus needs @ version 3.2.7600.251 or later in order communicate clients @ version 7.6.7600.256 or later.

resolution:
meanwhile resolve issue, 1 of workable troubleshooting steps listed follows:

note:
please make sure issue try resolve should have error 0x800b0001 , event id 25 shown above.
troubleshooting steps:
1. check windowsupdate.log in order understand causing issue.
2. if find following entries:
“warning: skipping scan, self-update check returned 0x800b0001”
“warning: wu client failed searching update error 0x800b0001”
(to understand how access , read windowsupdate.log file please refer following link –

follow steps:
3. stop automatic update service or run command: “net stop wuauserv”.
4. open regedit , browse following registry key:
hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\windowsupdate.
5. save copy of windowsupdate key (file / export or right-click / export).
6. delete following registry values:
hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\windowsupdate\pingid.
hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\windowsupdate\accountdo
mainsid.
hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\windowsupdate\susclientid
7. close regedit.
8. start automatic update service or run command: “net start wuauserv”.
9. on client machine, force synchronization wsus server: “wuauclt /detectnow”.
10. check windows update , click “check new updates”.
11. if message green bar appears indicates issue resolved.
12. if message red bar appears indicates issue not resolved , proceed with
further troubleshooting.
13. in command prompt run command: “netsh winhttp show proxy” – , check for
proxy configuration. if proxy not configured proceed follows.
14. stop win http proxy service , windows update service , register important dlls required changes take place following commands:

net stop winhttpautoproxysvc
net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 softpub.dll /s
regsvr32 wintrust.dll /s
regsvr32 initpki.dll /s
regsvr32 mssip32.dll /s.

15. in windows registry, following registry key - take backup: "hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\windowsupdate."
16. delete following registry value.
"hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\windowsupdate\susclientid”
17. run iisreset command in command prompt restart iis related services , start windows update service.
18. on client, force synchronization wsus server running command: “wuauclt /detectnow”.
19. after conducting troubleshooting steps, checked event logs , found following success event on client machine under applications , services logs >microsoft > windows > windowsupdateclient >operational:

hence issue resolved. no further action required.

21. if issue not resolved again apply following update on wsus server machine please sure apply update wsus server machine

28. apply update.

29. must restart computer after apply update.
30. start synchronization on wsus
31. wait synchronization succeed.
32. on affected client, open cmd.exe in elevated mode
33. type following commands.

net stop wuauserv

net start wuauserv

34. issue resolved once , all.

 microsoft has released update windows server update services (wsus) 3.0 service pack 2 (sp2)

 update strengthens wsus communication channels.

 windows update agent (wua) on computers managed wsus server automatically upgraded needed after apply update.

 wsus must in known, working state update work. if wsus configured synchronize updates microsoft update, make sure wsus can synchronize updates. and, clients must able communicate wsus server.

 update lets servers running windows server update services (wsus) 3.0 sp2 provide updates computers running windows 8 or windows server 2012.

any improvements or feedback on above troubleshooting steps surely welcome.
