Message (error?) while demoting domain controller using DCPROMO
hi
we have 2008 domain controller tried demote using dcpromo last night. server no longer pdc fsmo roles were transferred new server , has been running little more week.
i logged on account has schema-, domain- & enterprise-admins permissions set.
during active directory domain services installation wizard, on delete domain window, did not select delete domain because server last domain controller in domain option.
later in same wizard on remove dns delegations window, ensured option delete dns delegations pointing server. may prompted additional credentials delete delegation was selected.
i did authenticate when prompted , clicked the finish button. process took while , completed following message (error?):
"dcpromo unable remove dns delegations parent zone: .. because not have permissions so, or because zone hosted server not run windows. should delete dns delegations in parent zone domain. so, contact administrator responsible dns zone: .. error was: rpc server unavailable"
based on message, this was possibly due 2 reasons: (1.) user logged on , additional authentication provided during wizard not have correct permissions - not case, or (2.) the server hosts parent zone not run windows - again not case.
so questions are:
* cause this?
* implications have (if any)?
* should worry removing dns delegation server manually in parent zone? if so, how do this?
* there other potential problems should looking out needs tended to? e.g. manually delete or change things/entries/objects etc in ad ds or dns , forth?
* how i know demote process completed , necessary tasks , actions successful (other dns delegation removal issue)?
any appreciated. thank in advance efforts.
since isn't discussion instead question, should change thread type. many people ignore discussion threads.
if single domain in forest, demoting should good. have other zones delegated domain/zone? if want manually remove zone, should able go parent zone , delete ns , records zone.
if unsure if have type of issues. detail out problems aren't aware of.
