Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces Simple RAID 0 VERY SLOW reads, but fast writes with LSI 9207-8e SAS JBOD HBA Controller
has else seen windows server 2012 storage spaces simple raid 0 (also happens mirrored raid 1 , parity raid 5) virtual disk exhibiting extremely slow read speed of 5mb/sec, yet write performance normal @ 650mb/sec in raid 0?
windows server 2012 standard
intel i7 cpu , motherboard
lsi 9207-8e 6gb sas jbod controller latest firmware/bios , windows driver.
(4) hitachi 4tb 6gb sata enterprise hard disk drives hus724040ale640
(4) hitachi 4tb 6gb sata desktop hard disk drives hds724040ale640
hitachi drives directly connected lsi 9207-8e using 2-meter sas sff-8088 esata cable six-inch esata/sata adapter.
the enterprise drives on lsi's compatibility list. the desktop drives not, regardless, both drive models affected problem.
interestingly, entire configuration 2 siig esata 2-port adapters instead of lsi 9207-8e, works both reads , writes @ 670mb/sec.
i thought sas going sure bet expanding beyond capacity of port limited esata adapters, after week of frustration , spending on $5,000.00 on drives, controllers , cabling, it's time ask help!
any similar experiences or solutions?
wow, after solid week of utter frustration along sleep deprivation, have managed fix problem!!!! :-)
turns out culprit 1 thing shouldn't problem - sas cable!
lesson learned: careful of cheap, inexpensive sas cables!
yup, sff-8088 sas sata cable messing works.
after (finally) noticed multiple windows event viewer error messages disk i/o problems "the io operation @ logical block address 5e5ef0 disk 4 retried", removed drives raid 0 array , tested each disk drive individually copying 40gb file to/from separate drive directly connected 6gb motherboard sata port.
incredibly, 3 of 6 drives failed test. a 50% failure rate on brand new drives improbable. and, since lsi 9207-8e board has great reputation, remaining scofflaw, tragically, !@*^$#g sas cable.
fortunately, vendor of lsi certified cables (www.magentacomputer.com) able provide perfect, high-quality working sas cable. for record, magenta computer unrelated source of bad sas cable.
thankfully, working now! no more slow performance!!! :-) storage spaces works great!!
