Some VSS Questions

i message:

 

 volume shadow copy service error: unexpected error vss_e_writer_status_not_available. older active writer session state being overwritten newer session. common cause number of parallel backups has exceeded maximum supported limit.  hr = 0x80042409.

 

...when taking host level backup using diskshadow of multiple hyper-v hosts running between 25 , 30 vms each..

 

i scripting , absolutely sure clear previous backups afterwards deleting whole set. will  generate message on fresh backup no previous shadow sets exist on system. worry , there can fix ?

 

i  have 2 issues hyper-v vss. ‘create’ part of diskshadow stuck @ ‘create’ eternally. when mean 4 times in thousand backups. there no indication in host or guest why happens. also, less occasionally, let’s twice in thousand backups, patched hyper-v host has reset (and generated no dumps) @ create stage of vss shadow. want make absolutely clear above error not related, vss related error message ever see...

 

also. while i’m here. secondary question... right in assuming shadow storage settings (i.e. vssadmin resize shadowstorage etc) default kind of auto management? if run ”vssadmin list shadowstorage” on virgin installation of windows has taken multiple shadows has not had setting fiddled with, return “no items found satisfy query.” if manually set appears default “x on x unbounded, y on y unbounded, blah blah”, ”vssadmin list shadowstorage” returns these static settings , there appears no way (perceived) state of auto management. right exists , if how explicitly reset defaults.

hi nick,

i personaly think when set "maxsize" value you define border how system can use shadowcopystorage space , "automanaged" should mean system can use 100% of available storage vss purpose.

checkout technet /maxsize parameter:

specifies maximum amount of space can used storing shadow copies. if no value specified /maxsize, there no limit placed on amount of storage space can used.
