VMs disappearing from Admin Console
i have noticed of wsus clients running server 2k3 ent on vms periodically disappear admin console. if go 1 not showing , run wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow, show in console, 1 of vms disappears. have identified 2 machines seem teeder-todder , forth. both clients appear configured correctly. identifies them admin console seem overwrite 1 another?
this typical behavior of duplicated susclientids, guid identifies client wsus server, , typically caused unhealthy system cloning procedures. since we're talking vms, i'll venture guess of vms built same parent vhd, , should -- applied of updates parent vhd before cloning it. unfortunately, it's susclientid of parent vm that's being cloned of other vms.
in registry key hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\windowsupdate
delete susclientid , susclientvalidationid values
and restart automatic updates service.
the next time machine executes detection generate new guid , report wsus server.
the permanent fix delete susclientid , susclientvalidationid parent vhd before shutting down , marking vhd readonly.
